Monday Newsfeed: Westerlies still to blow over NZ as Southern Ocean storms continue (+4 Maps)

It’s a new week but the same old weather pattern as NZ still has those windy westerlies carrying on with severe gales still possible through some parts of the South Island and around Cook Strait .

Let’s get into the forecast for Monday

RAIN:
Heavy rain sets in again over on the West Coast but only a few showers will go elsewhere. Most places in the east and north-east are dry, although a few showers or some patchy rain may arrive in parts of the western North Island overnight.

WIND:
West to NW winds are strong around some parts of the South Island – keep up-to-date with any possible MetService warnings or watches. Eastern areas and mountainous areas will be more exposed to the north westerly wind.

TEMPERATURES:
That wind speed and strength means that temperatures will be up in many eastern areas with most of the country leaning warmer than average for this time of the year on Monday.

WEEK AHEAD:
A cold change moves into the South Island on Tuesday with a dusting of snow on the southern mountains. Rain continues on the West Coast, with showers for the western North Island. There may also be showers around Southland and a few spilling over into Otago. Everywhere else should be dry or mostly dry.

On Wednesday colder/cooler air moves into the North Island – especially around the east in places like Wairarapa, Hawkes Bay and Gisborne. Windy nor’westers continue in the lower South Island but the upper North Island has sou-westers easing with high pressure nearby in the northern Tasman Sea.

Those windy north-westers carry on as we get into Thursday while high-pressure tracks over the very top of the North Island bringing lighter winds there.

And on Friday a weak cold front moves into the North Island while winds finally ease for a time in the South Island.
