Monday and Tuesday kick off with high pressure expanding over New Zealand – coming from out of the southern Tasman Sea area, and as this anticyclone expands it will finally push the low pressure zone (that brought rain to the Far North at the weekend) further out to sea and away from land.
There isn’t a lot happening to start off this week weather-wise, but things get busier mid to late week.
RAIN:
Rain-wise the South Island does have some wet weather moving up part of the West Coast for Monday – this will fall as light snow on the tops of the South Island alpine passes this morning.
In the North Island a few showers brush the west and south-west coastlines but it won’t be much.
WIND:
Winds today are mostly light around New Zealand. There’s a south-east wind around Northland, and at the other end of the country a wind flow from the westerly quarter moves into some parts of the South Island. These winds aren’t strong but after the very frosty weekend these winds will help lift up temperatures a little both by day and by night (frost are more likely well inland and higher elevation).
TEMPERATURES:
Temperatures overall are typical for winter today, but the coming days will become a little milder than average by a few degrees thanks to windier westerlies that are partially out of Australia for a time.
WEEK AHEAD:
Tuesday looks similar to Monday for many regions, but a little drier – Wednesday sees a cold front move into the South Island from the west. On Thursday and Friday a weak low likely spins off from that cold front over the North Island – bringing some wet & cold weather, meanwhile high pressure once again returns to the South Island by Friday – then into the North Island for the coming weekend bringing mainly dry skies to NZ.
