Lusi brings wind, rain & calm

> From the WeatherWatch archives

Weather conditions are going downhill across northern New Zealand as ex-cyclone Lusi moves in.

The storm still retains category 1 strength winds with sustained gales near the centre and gusts over 100km/h.

The terrain of New Zealand is helping boost those wind speeds further in some exposed parts of Northland.

In Auckland winds are gale force in some places while other suburbs are fairly calm.  Around the upper North Island visitors to WeatherWatch.co.nz are reporting sudden bursts of wind and rain moving in.

Trees are down in parts of Northland and powercuts are being reported in Auckland and Northland.

Some areas in the path of the wind remain calm though – this might change as the low drops further south shifting the winds from easterly to northerly and then north west.

The former tropical storm is about 200kms north of Cape Reinga and will slowly drift past the Far North later this afternoon.  Winds will continue to increase across today across the North Island.

Rain has been patchy, as forecast by WeatherWatch.co.nz, but some heavy falls are affecting the upper North Island.

I am South-west of Auckland (rural). Now – rain is steady. Wind not too fierce(it wouldn’t hold you up if you let go) I am high up and last night the wind was whistling down the valley nearby, bugs cleared out about 3.30pm Friday and moon was in it’s house. These are all signs of severe weather for the uninformed reader! Lost our ph connection, maybe later our power? Hope it clears Sunday for Purim!

We seem to be experiencing the condition you have outlined here, Whangarei was seemingly quite calm earlier with strong gusts of wind and moderate rain being blown around. My wife commented it could be improving but do not think so as now the wind has increased quite a bit. No heavy rain as yet but wind makes it look like it.

Our barometric pressure too is still over the 1000mB and seemingly stable. I need to modify my earlier post as now I have had a look around out there I think we had steady rainfall over night but winds must have been quite strong due to the spread of debris, ie small tree branches etc, so will have plenty of work Sunday.

Hope everyone out there is safe as I certainly am not going anywhere.
