A large earthquake has been felt across the North and South Islands tonight.
The 6.5 magnitude quake was centred 60 km south-west of Opunake at a depth of 257 kilometres.
The earthquake was felt in Taranaki, Wellington, Napier, Manawatu and as far south as Christchurch.
The earthquake was heavily felt in Wellington city.
A Fire Service spokesman said there had been no reports of significant damage yet.
“It is at a depth of 257 kms, which means we are pretty lucky at the moment.”

Quake felt well here in Waikanae on the Kapiti Coast. Woke me from a deep sleep.
Very noisey and had a few ornaments on the floor. Seemed to go for ages. A rolling motion, felt like it went for a couple of minutes!
I’m now waiting for the aftershocks and have moved some precious items off my shelves!
