A volcanic eruption has created a new island in the ocean south of Tokyo, according to the Japanese coast guard today.
A statement from the Japan Meteorological Agency said the “island” is about 200 metres in diameter, and has arisen off the coast of Nishinoshima, a small island itself, in the chain of Ogasawara, or Bonin, Islands.
The chain is part of the infamous “ring of fire”, a seismically active section of the Pacific Ocean.
