A northeasterly airflow lies over New Zealand today as a front and low combination move in from the Tasman Sea, another low moves down from the north. This low pressure system moves over the North Island on Saturday as cool southerlies spread over the South Island. Southeasterlies for the North Island on Sunday, easterlies in the south.
Friday
Blue – Rain along the West Coast of the South Island and about Southland may be heavy at times from later in the evening / overnight. Towards dawn on Saturday some heavy rain moves into northeastern parts of the North Island.
Cool to start off for some inland areas, also a chance of fog again in the morning about the upper North Island mainly inland.
Saturday
Blue – Rain about the east of the North Island may be heavy for a time in the afternoon then easing.
Rain about Canterbury (mainly inland) becoming heavy later in the morning then easing during the afternoon.
Purple – Southerly winds through central New Zealand strengthen from late afternoon / evening with winds gusting to gale at times later in the day / overnight.
Sunday
Purple – Strong southerlies through central New Zealand ease during the day.
