Unstable conditions and a strong westerly airflow ease over the North Island later in the afternoon or evening while a south to southwesterly airflow eases over the South Island.

For much of the North Island expect showers, especially in the west where some may be heavy with thunderstorms and hail then easing late afternoon / evening. Strong westerly winds ease later in the day also.

Rain or showers clear about the lower North Island in the afternoon and some sun breaks through, gusty southerly winds ease in the evening. Gisborne starts the day mainly sunny then afternoon showers move in, possibly heavy with thunderstorms and hail before clearing later in the evening.

About the eastern South Island up through to Nelson a few morning showers clear then sunny areas increase, in the afternoon about Tasman, Nelson and perhaps parts of Marlborough a few isolated showers may get going with one or two isolated heavy falls then clearing in the evening.

A mainly sunny day for the West Coast of the South Island, any morning cloud clears about Southland and Central Otago to a mainly sunny day.
