A front moves onto the lower South Island this morning then slowly pushes northwards reaching Canterbury overnight, meanwhile conditions are still fairly settled further north. This front stalls over the South Island on Wednesday.
Mostly sunny for the upper North Island today, there may be a few early mist or fog patches Waikato northwards then quickly clearing. Sunny and hot in the east with some developing high cloud. Morning cloud breaks to sunny spells in the southwest. Rain pushes northwards along the West Coast of the South Island during the day. Morning showers move through Southland then into Otago during the afternoon, not reaching Canterbury till overnight.
Sunny areas and thickening high cloud on Wednesday for most of the North Island, some mid level cloud thickens in the southwest. Areas of rain or showers in the west and north of the South Island, patchy rain in the east starts to clear in the afternoon and some sun may break through. Any morning rain clears Southland / Otago with sunny spells developing, in the afternoon isolated showers move in (more so inland) with a chance of heavy falls / thunder then easing later in the evening.
