A front lies over Central New Zealand first thing today then slowly moves northwards, a ridge slips in behind the front over the South Island. Mostly anticyclonic on Tuesday for the South Island meanwhile a southeasterly airflow moving around this high pushes over the North Island.

Sunny areas and some high cloud for the upper North Island today, rain or showers for the lower North Island, becoming heavy in the east. A mostly cloudy day for the eastern South Island with light showers or drizzle, becoming mainly dry in the evening. Sunnier conditions out west. South of about Otago Peninsula in the east conditions are a bit sunnier with some cloud at times.

A few showers or drizzle patches for the east / northeast of the North Island on Tuesday, drier conditions out west but expect some cloud at times. The South Island is mostly sunny, some morning cloud in the east breaks away.
