A low pressure system fires an easterly quarter airflow over the South Island today meanwhile most of the North Island has northwesterlies. A large broad low rotates onto the North Island on Tuesday from the Tasman Sea bringing further unsettled weather for both Islands.
It may be dry for many North Island regions this morning then showers develop in the afternoon, some could be heavy bringing downpours and thunderstorms then easing this evening. The Wairarapa and Wellington (especially in the east) sees periods of rain today with heavy falls at times. Moving into the South Island, some heavy rain for Marlborough and Northwest Nelson. Areas of rain or showers for much of Canterbury and northern Otago. Sunny spells for Southland and South Westland, may be an isolated shower for Fiordland late afternoon / evening otherwise mainly dry. North Westland and Buller sees cloudy areas and the odd shower.
Another dry morning for many around the North Island on Tuesday, showers developing once again in the afternoon possibly heavy with downpours and a risk of thunder. Morning heavy rain about the Wairarapa and coastal Marlborough eases. A few showers or drizzle patches for Nelson, Canterbury and North Otago, a mix of sun and cloud elsewhere.
