Higher risk for rain in parched South this week

> From the WeatherWatch archives

As the news becomes a little brighter for North Islanders weatherwise this week it could be going downhill in the South – but that’s expected to be welcome news for many as parts of Southland and Otago teeter on drought conditions.

Rain over the past few days has helped but without follow-up rain the dry ground will return quickly.

However WeatherWatch.co.nz says there is an elevated risk for rain and showers over the next 10 days in Southland.

The weather news authority says showers will continue through Monday with rain returning later in the week, probably around Thursday, with 70% confidence.

For many days this summer confidence for rain in Southland has been 0 to 10%.

WeatherWatch.co.nz says next weekend may also see rain or showers.

While rainfall totals may not be especially high, the follow up rain will be very welcome by farmers, gardeners and those who rely on rain water.
