UPDATED:
The crown forecaster is today saying there’s a risk of severe thunderstorms developing as a surge of rough weather comes out of the Southern Ocean and into the North Island’s west coast.

Just had a huge storm over the Waikato. Fork lighning, the works! It passed pretty quickly though. Very impressive! Power supply was surging quite a bit too.

We’ve just had a few flashes and big rumbles – fingers crossed it’s a day of it! The Lightning Radar looks promising…for a change 🙂

As of 20 mins ago Wellington received its first salvo; Fire service is currently attending to a shed fire in High Street, Lower Hutt caused by a lightning strike, Power pole was also hit in the same area and a report of a house in Wainui hit also.

Thunderstorms in Wellington, map shows this area as low risk but I don’t think so! Having trouble with the metservice page, overloaded?

Seems they did not foresee such a major thunderstorm in Wellington!

masterton was in the no thunderstorm area , as i right this i can hear loud thunder,,,, has the forcaste changed?

Definitely a possibility over the next 24 hours but it’s certainly more of a west coast event at this stage.

Ooh, upper North Island has now been upgraded to high risk (as of 9.15am).
