High pressure arriving, but spring’s windy westerlies surge back late week & weekend

High pressure continues to expand over NZ while a weak front stalls and falls apart over central NZ.

Let’s get into the forecast for Tuesday to start with…

RAIN:
Most places are dry today but a narrow cold front does move into the top half of the South Island, with a few isolated heavy falls in the west, but low totals for most in the east. Tonight a few showers or patchy rain makes it into the lower North Island, but that front is falling apart.

WIND:
Westerly quarter winds for most of the North Island and fairly light winds for the South Island.

TEMPERATURES:
Most places are average to warmer than average today, for the first week of November.

WEEK & WEEKEND AHEAD
On Wednesday and Thursday high pressure expands over much of the country and then departs – destroying most of that rain band as it struggles to move further up the North Island, so will only bring a few showers, mostly to the west, along with cloudy areas. On Thursday also some inland afternoon downpours or thunderstorms are likely for inland parts of the North Island.

Windy nor’westers return over the South Island and lower North Island as the high pressure departs to our east over Thursday and Friday.

By Saturday – Windy westerlies carry on with potentially severe gales through the upper South Island and along the Southern Alps – with heavy West Coast rain, further colder showers in Southland but a warm and windy nor-wester for much of the North Island and other eastern parts of NZ.

Sunday turns colder for the lower South Island as a weak cold front moves into the North Island. Spring-weather continues.
