Heavy swells cancel ferries; snow for the south

> From the WeatherWatch archives

Dangerous conditions in Cook Strait have forced the Interislander to cancel two sailings of the Kaitaki ferry.

The 8.30am sailing from Wellington was canned due to swells of up to eight metres this morning.

The 1.15pm return journey from Picton has also been cancelled.

An Interislander spokesperson says the weather conditions are too dangerous to ensure the safety of passengers and crew.

Snow for the south

Small dumpings of snow are expected as low as 200 metres in the south this morning.

A southerly flow is working its way across most of the country.

Drivers planning on using Lewis Pass and Milford Road should be particularly weary.

Snow is also expected on parts of the Rimutaka Hill Road and the central North Island.
