Heavy rain is possible this weekend for the western SI

> From the WeatherWatch archives

Strong low pressure over the Tasman Sea will move closer to New Zealand tomorrow, opening the door for rounds of substantial rain about the western South Island.

Government forecaster MetService has issued a Heavy Rain Warning for Westland.  According to MetService’s website; “In the 24 hours from midnight Saturday to midnight Sunday, expect 100 to 150mm of rain to accumulate. Peak intensities of 15 to 25mm/hr late Sunday morning through to early Sunday evening in possible thunderstorms. Note, further heavy rain can be expected on Monday”.

There is a threat for heavy rain in Buller and Nelson on Sunday where MetService says rainfall accumulations could approach warning criteria.  The heaviest rain here is expected to fall about the ranges of northern Buller and northwest Nelson.

People in these areas are advised to stay on top of the latest forecasts regarding this heavy rain threat.
