Hail, thunder, cold hammer south

> From the WeatherWatch archives

Wintry conditions have taken hold of eastern areas of the mainland this afternoon with temperatures falling to single figures as squally conditions take hold.

Parts of Canterbury have seen lightning, hail and strong southerlies this afternoon including parts of Christchurch city.

Conditions are expected to improve for the weekend with temperatures in the low 20s with plenty of sunshine for Cantabrians however tonight should see the mercury fall to near freezing, especially in inland areas of Canterbury.

Looks like the front has arrived in Wellington, big power surges not long ago and raining. (Don’t know yet whether there is visible lightning or audible thunder.)
