A glider pilot has had a lucky escape after a crash in Paraparaumu.
The incident happened around 11am.
Police spokesman, Peter Theobald, says the pilot made an emergency landing in Tongariro Street near a school, he was assessed by ambulance staff at the scene but not taken to hospital.
Fairly strong westerlies are blowing across Paraparaumu today.
Winds are averaging 30km/h with gusts around 50km/h.

I drove past there about 15-30 minutes afterwards. Street was closed, but as per the picture the glider looked like it was not too badly smashed. Am very glad to hear that the pilot was OK.
Still pretty windy out and plenty of other gliders are up, enjoying the day. Glad they’ve not all been put off.

Why would this clown even be flying on a day like today today? Strong winds, heavy rain showers. Its not like he would be able to see much anyway! Could have very easyly killed someone. Dickhead!

Not sure where you are from but its been a nice day here… sunny.. no rain at all. and no strong winds…. I wouldnt even call it winds….. He crashed outside my Daughters school, I wouldnt call that the CBD of Paraparaumu
