GALES MOVE INTO AUCKLAND

WeatherWatch.co.nz

> From the WeatherWatch archives

After a very windy Saturday over 2 thirds of New Zealand yesterday, with gusts to 130km/h in Wellington, the gale force nor’westers have  this morning moved north into Auckland.

Already today gales have blasted exposed hilly parts of Auckland with gusts in the past hour to 111km/h.  At street level gusts are almost half that at 60km/h however the Weather Watch Centre estimates high rise buildings and hilly suburbs will be receiving gusts around 90km/h.

The strong winds are expected to slowly ease throughout this afternoon as a small high moves in from the Tasman.

Motorists crossing the Harbour Bridge are advised to take particular care as strong winds blow across the Waitemata Harbour.

Funny that – in Howick (suburb east of the city) we have peak wind gusts no more than 33km/h this morning.

Morning David,

Yes the winds are certainly in isolated pockets this morning.  110km/h gusts on the Manukau Heads, 50km/h gusts at Auckland Airport, 60 km/h gusts at Whenuapai.
