Frosty nights coming for inland South Island

> From the WeatherWatch archives

Widespread frosts are possible through the South Island’s interior over the next couple of nights with temperatures dropping well below zero inland around the mountains.

Main centres are also caught up in the potential frosty weather. Queenstown, Alexandra, Lumsden, Gore and Wanaka are all in the ballpark for frosts with overnight lows dropping to around -1 to +2 in these places over the next two or three nights.

Canterbury may see some light frosts too but the further north you go there is more wind and cloud to keep overnight lows above the freezing mark.

The North Island does have some colder nights coming up but many places will still be between +6 and +11 degrees, well above frost risks. Only those around Mt Ruapehu (like Ohakune and Waiouru) may be in the frost territory next couple of nights.

Warmer weather returns next week for a time.
