Here’s what is making the weather headlines today…..
WARM IN THE EAST
Reasonably settled today compared to what is on the way for Saturday, eastern regions will be warm reaching into the early twenties, perhaps mid twenties for Marlborough.
SEVERE GALES, HEAVY RAIN – SATURDAY
Heavy rain develops for South Westland overnight reaching North Westland tomorrow morning thanks to a front pushing in from the Tasman Sea, heavy rain eases late afternoon. There may be thunder.
Expect very strong northwesterlies in the east on Saturday, developing in the morning then easing late afternoon or evening. Winds for Mid and North Canterbury look particularly strong, gale to severe gale northwesterlies.
Also expect gale to severe gale northwesterly winds through Cook Strait, easing later in the day.
Overnight Saturday / early Sunday morning heavy rain moves back into South Westland thanks to another front, this time the thunder risk goes up.

NEXT HIGH?
With the weather about to become very unsettled this weekend it’s always interesting to wonder about when conditions will be broadly speaking settled again.
The answer appears to be around Thursday 19th October when high pressure covers most of the country, a low to the north may bring rain into Northland though.
