Friday’s News: Showers in far north & far south – Where temperatures are highest? – High pressure Labour Day Monday

> From the WeatherWatch archives

Here’s what is making the weather headlines today…..

RAIN IN THE NORTH, SHOWERS IN THE SOUTH

Much of the country is dry and settled today, however Fiordland, Southland and perhaps parts of Otago see showers then Northland has showers at the other end, perhaps the risk of a shower for northern parts of Auckland.

Expect rain for northern parts of Northland today, eastern Northland overnight and rain may move into Coromandel overnight also.

WARM FOR THE NORTH ISLAND AND INNER SOUTH ISLAND

Cloud along the western and eastern coastlines for the South Island means coastal areas are a touch cool today but inland areas should be mostly sunny and warm.

A good chunk of the North Island has warm temperatures today south of Auckland, coastal spots will be a touch cooler than further inland thanks to onshore winds. Inland parts of the eastern North Island will likely be the warmest today getting into the mid twenties.

If we look at a temperature map for the 950mb level (560m up) we can see the heat for inland parts of the South Island showing (brighter colours), this reflects the warmer temperatures at higher elevations. Our second image below shows cloud in the west and east keeping coastal areas cooler.

Much of Nelson, Tasman and Buller is mostly sunny and warm but coastal parts of Buller will be cooler thanks to a southwest breeze.

HIGH PRESSURE MONDAY NEXT WEEK

Monday next week looks to be the time when high pressure covers all of the country. All regions should be settled and there will be a fair amount of sun.

The West Coast has some mid level cloud though and there will be a touch of high cloud over the South Island spreading out ahead of a front in the Tasman Sea.

For the North Island there is some cloud for Hawkes Bay and Gisborne, also some cloud for the upper North Island that may deliver a shower or two.
