Here’s what is making the weather headlines today….

FRONT MOVES NORTH – HEAVY RAIN, SNOW

A front pushes northwards over the South Island today with plenty of rain likely, the heaviest falls will be along the West Coast and about the Main Divide, also for North Otago and the Canterbury high country to an extent.

Snow is likely for inland Southland and Otago this morning (heavy for northern parts of Otago), easing later today. Snow falls to 500m.

Expect snow to lower to 400m for South Canterbury this afternoon or evening, falling to 800m for northern North Canterbury. There is a chance snow may get a touch lower than the levels mentioned here but most of the heavier stuff will be above.

FRONT REACHES THE NORTH ISLAND ON SATURDAY – HEAVY RAIN

Our front causing some havoc for the South Island today reaches the North Island Saturday afternoon spreading in from the west. Expect heavy falls to set in late afternoon or evening, some decent rain is likely in the east too but the heaviest falls will be in the west.

The front clears off to the northeast on Sunday.

FROSTY MONDAY MORNING – SOUTH ISLAND

Skies become reasonably calm overnight Sunday with cloud breaking away a touch, this means a chance of frosts on Monday morning which will be of concern to growers considering the time of year.
