Here’s what is making the weather headlines today….
ANOTHER SETTLED DAY
Yes it’s been a reasonably relaxing week when it comes to the weather world, high pressure has brought docile conditions. Not completely plain sailing though with areas of cloud about, a few light showers here and there, frosty mornings and fog.
Today we have frosts to start but mainly about inland parts, especially alpine areas, although it’s not to say it won’t get cold towards coastal areas in the South Island but just not a frost. And yes some fog too. Most regions are dry apart from the risk of a light shower about the upper North Island, Fiordland and a higher chance for the eastern North Island along the coastal fringe.
COLD FRONT THIS WEEKEND
A cold front moves into the lower South Island around midday on Saturday, reaching Canterbury in the evening. There will be some cold air so snow flurries about the far south to 400m at night are possible, 700m at night for Canterbury.
As this south to southwest change hits South Canterbury early evening there is a chance of a few heavy showers then moving north through inland areas overnight although the overnight stuff may be more in the realm of rain for Mid and North Canterbury. Coastal Canterbury will eventually get showers, it’s just a bit more persistent inland.
Sunday sees showers for the south and east of the South Island, the air gets a bit colder so snow flurries to 200m in the far south are possible, 400m for Canterbury. The precipitation rates are not overly high though so any snow will likely be flurries, the levels mentioned above may only get a dusting if anything settling at all, it will be higher up that there will be any accumulations of note.
