Friday’s national forecast – WNW airflow

A westerly airflow lies over the North Island today, tending north to northwest for the South Island. Eastern regions are warm, in the west there is some cloud and a few showers. Heavy rain for the West Coast overnight.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Partly cloudy with the odd shower, drying up in the afternoon. Bay Of Plenty is mainly dry and mostly sunny. Westerlies tend northwest at night.
Highs: 16 – 20

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Partly cloudy, one or two light showers possible mainly for Taranaki and Kapiti. Northwesterlies, freshening a little from afternoon about coastal parts.
Highs: 15 – 17

Eastern North Island

Sunny, winds from the north. Winds may tend northeast near the coast for Hawkes Bay and Gisborne in the afternoon.
Highs: 19 – 22

Wellington

A mix of sun and cloud, northerlies strengthen from afternoon, gales later in the day especially through Cook Strait.
Highs: 15 – 17

Marlborough & Nelson

Mostly sunny with some high cloud, north to northwesterly winds pick up from afternoon.
Highs: 19 – 24

Canterbury

Mostly sunny with some high cloud, rain overnight in the high country spreading from the west. Northerlies tend northwest in the afternoon. Overnight or more likely on Saturday morning expect gale to severe gale northwesterly winds, spits of rain may spread to the coast at this point.
Highs: 20 – 23

West Coast

Mostly cloudy with a few showers especially from midday, Buller has sunny spells and drier weather. Overnight rain moves in becoming heavy. Northerlies become strong overnight with coastal gales likely.
Highs: 14 – 18

Southland & Otago
Sun and high cloud, rain overnight about the Lakes District. Breezy north to northwesterly winds especially in the afternoon.
Highs: 19 – 22
