Friday’s national forecast – Very unsettled today

A strong southwesterly airflow spreads northwards over the country today bringing very unsettled weather, rain or showers can be expected for all regions.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Showers with northwesterlies changing strong to gale westerly around midday. Showers could become heavy at times for the Waikato. Winds tend a little more southwest later on.
Highs: 17-19

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Showers, turning to rain late morning with heavy falls and possible thunderstorms. Easing back for a time in the afternoon then in the evening westerlies (strong to gale about the coast) change to the south with further heavy showers and this time some hail before easing overnight. Snow to 700m about the Central Plateau later in the day.
Highs: 10-16

Eastern North Island

Mostly sunny, Wairarapa has rain spread from the west around midday. Late afternoon or evening rain about Wairarapa may be heavy for a time as northwesterlies change southwest then spreading into Hawkes Bay and Gisborne overnight, mainly along the coastal fringe. Snow about the ranges of Wairarapa to 700m later in the day.
Highs: 16-19

Wellington

Showers turn to rain late morning with heavy falls, thunderstorms and hail possible. Strong to gale northwesterlies change to the south around midday. Rain eases back to a few showers in the evening.
Highs: 14-15

Marlborough & Nelson

Morning rain then easing to showers as northwesterlies change southwest, showers clear in the afternoon for Nelson then evening for Marlborough.
Highs: 13-15

Canterbury

Showers turn to rain in the morning, starting to clear in the evening inland at first then nearer the coast. Snow may reach down to about 600m for a time before clearing away. Fresh southwesterlies ease later in the day.
Highs: 11-16

West Coast

Rain with heavy falls, thunderstorms and hail then easing from afternoon with sun starting to break through for South Westland. Snow to 600m for Fiordland. Rain overnight for Fiordland with the snow level lifting. Fresh southwesterlies.
Highs: 8-15

Southland & Otago
Showers, isolated heavy falls, there may be some thunder and hail. Coastal Otago may be dry in the morning with some sun before showers move in. Snow flurries possible to 500 or maybe 400m. A burst of rain moves in overnight but the snow level does lift. Fresh southwesterlies, strong about the coast.
Highs: 8-11
