Friday’s national forecast – Two fronts

Two fronts marching northwards over the country bring unsettled weather today, the airflow is generally from the northwest but changing colder southwest about the lower South Island around midday, reaching the lower North Island overnight.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Showers, perhaps some rain for the Waikato and Bay Of Plenty, Northland has more frequent dry areas. Overnight showers may become heavy, perhaps some thunder. North to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 22-24

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Cloudy with showers or some rain, overnight rain may be heavy with thunder about coastal parts. Northwesterly winds.
Highs: 18-24
Eastern North Island

Morning spits of rain then drying out with high cloud, overnight rain moves back in. North to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 22-25

Wellington

Rain, easing from afternoon to showers. Strong north to northwesterly winds, gales through Cook Strait.
High: 21

Marlborough & Nelson

Morning rain then clearing, sun may break through otherwise mostly cloudy. Later in the evening or overnight expect showers. Gusty north to northwesterly winds change to the south overnight.
Highs: 24-25

Canterbury

High cloud, rain up in the high country close to the main divide, some scattered rain may spread further eastwards especially in the afternoon as a front passes over. Northerly winds strong for North Canterbury, late afternoon or evening a southwest change moves northwards binging showers, some may be heavy with thunder, easing overnight.
Highs: 24-27

West Coast

Heavy rain and thunderstorms, rain eases about South Westland from afternoon then further north at night. Gusty northwesterlies.
Highs: 19-21

Southland & Otago
There may be a dry spell then showers develop late morning, showers may be heavy with a rumble of thunder then easing, clearing later in the day. Southwesterlies develop about Southland late morning then spreading northwards.
Highs: 17-24
