Friday’s national forecast – Southerlies spread northwards

An area of low pressure brings rain or showers to the North Island today, perhaps a few heavy falls. Southerlies for the South Island.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Mostly cloudy, showers develop during the morning pushing in from the Tasman Sea. Rain moves in for the Waikato and Bay Of Plenty, easing to showers in the evening. Northwesterlies change southwest later in the day.
Highs: 15-17

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Showers turn to rain during the morning, there could be a few heavy falls and maybe a thunderstorm. Light winds then south to southeasterly winds pick up from afternoon. Rain eases to a few showers by evening, starting to clear overnight.
Highs: 12-16

Eastern North Island

Rain develops about Wairarapa in the morning, spreading into Hawkes Bay in the afternoon then reaching Gisborne in the evening as southwesterlies freshen. Sun before rain moves in with northwesterlies.
Highs: 14-19

Wellington

Rain, easing to showers late afternoon. Fresh to strong southerly winds.
Highs: 11-13

Marlborough & Nelson

Rain, easing and clearing in the afternoon to sun. Southerly winds.
Highs: 13-16

Canterbury

Showers, mostly clearing away in the evening. Parts of South Canterbury may stay dry all day. Southwesterly winds.
Highs: 10-12

West Coast

Sunny for South Westland, further north a few morning showers clear then sunny areas increase. Southeasterly winds.
Highs: 14-17

Southland & Otago
Sunny, some cloud later in the day for Southland then Otago overnight. Light winds tend southwest in the afternoon.
Highs: 12-14
