A north to northwesterly airflow strengthens over the South Island today bringing rain in the west, mainly dry and warm weather in the east. The North Island has a ridge of high pressure so is calmer but there is the odd shower in the southwest.
Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Morning fog then mostly sunny, some cloud in the east from Bay Of Plenty up through to eastern Northland during the day. Coromandel northwards in the east sees a few light showers move in overnight. North to northeasterly winds.
Highs: 16-17
Western North Island (including Central North Island)
A mix of sun and cloud, Kapiti and Taranaki have the odd shower. North to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 13-17
Eastern North Island
Sunny and warm, high cloud develops for Wairarapa from afternoon. Northerly winds, tending northeast in the afternoon for coastal Hawkes Bay and Gisborne.

Wellington
Partly cloudy, cloud thickens from midday with north to northwesterly winds strengthening, gales develop through Cook Strait. A few spits of rain or the odd shower in the north, reaching into the CBD at times especially later on.
High: 16-17
Marlborough & Nelson
Mostly sunny with high cloud increasing from afternoon. A few spits or showers for Tasman and the Sounds late afternoon or evening. North to northwesterly winds pick up after midday.
Highs: 16-18
Canterbury
Sun and increasing high cloud, north to northwesterly winds freshen from afternoon becoming strong for some especially inland. A few spits of rain possible for South Canterbury in the evening.
Highs: 16-18
West Coast
Rain although Buller may be dry in the morning, heavy rain for Fiordland especially from afternoon with a chance of thunderstorms. Heavy rain spreads northwards in the evening to reach up to about Greymouth overnight. Northwesterlies freshen.

Southland & Otago
High cloud, rain spreads into the Lakes District from the west. Southland sees spits of rain develop in the morning then Otago in the afternoon. North to northwesterly winds strengthen.
