A large deep low sits in the Tasman Sea today ready to move over New Zealand, but not today, it will cross over the North Island tomorrow. Today we have a few fronts coming out from this low that move over the North Island this morning and out to the east.
Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Sunny spells for Northland with the odd isolated shower. Morning rain further south with heavy falls possible especially in the east (chance of thunder too) then easing from afternoon with sun breaking through as blustery northeasterlies tend more to the north. From evening northerlies strengthen with gales developing for coastal areas (especially in the west), rain moves in from the Tasman overnight.

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Morning rain then sunny spells and the odd isolated shower, rain moves back into Taranaki during the evening. Northeasterly winds, strong for coastal Taranaki especially later.
Highs: 14-19
Eastern North Island
Rain, clearing in the afternoon then sun developing. Breezy northeasterlies.
Highs: 18-19
Wellington
Morning rain then spits and a few sunny spells breaking through, light winds tend to the south in the afternoon.
Highs: 16-18
Marlborough & Nelson
Rain eases to a few spits around midday, rain moves in again during the evening, heavy falls for Nelson, especially Tasman. Southeasterlies.
Highs: 14-15
Canterbury
Cloudy, expect some rain then breaking up in the afternoon, South Canterbury may stay dry. Later in the evening or overnight rain moves in again. Southwesterlies.
Highs: 10-13
West Coast
Dry for South Westland, morning showers clear Fiordland then expect high cloud. Rain further north, breaking up for Buller in the afternoon then rain pushes down from the north again in the evening. Southeasterlies.
Highs: 13-18
Southland & Otago
Mostly cloudy, coastal Southland may see a shower or two, showers becoming a little more widespread from evening or overnight. Light winds tend southeast in the afternoon.
