Friday’s national forecast – Heavy rain moves in lower North Island

A stationary front lies over the lower North Island today with heavy rain moving into Taranaki this afternoon then elsewhere about the lower North Island this evening. Very humid for the upper North Island with northerlies. A majority of the South Island is mainly settled, some rain for Nelson and Marlborough this evening.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Mostly cloudy with patchy rain or showers, Waikato and Bay Of Plenty may be dry in the morning though. Humid northeasterly winds.
Highs: 24-27

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Thickening high cloud and humid. Mostly cloudy for Taranaki with rain developing by midday and spreading elsewhere this afternoon. Rain becomes heavy this afternoon for Taranaki and elsewhere this evening. Light winds then expect Northerlies later, tending southeast in the south.
Highs: 21-26

Eastern North Island

Mostly cloudy and humid with light winds, spits of rain possible from afternoon, rain sets in more in the evening. Heavy for Wairarapa.
Highs: 27-29

Wellington

Mostly cloudy with the odd spit or shower, rain develops in the evening, possibly heavy overnight. Southerly quarter winds develop around midday.
Highs: 23-26

Marlborough & Nelson

Mostly cloudy with the odd shower, rain develops in the evening as light winds tend southerly.
Highs: 23-26

Canterbury

Cloudy areas, thickening up in the afternoon as light winds tend easterly. A light shower may move through as easterlies develop.
Highs: 21-27

West Coast

Mostly sunny but expect some high cloud, a few light morning showers clear Fiordland. Rain develops in the evening north of Karamea. Light winds tend southwest in the afternoon.
Highs: 22-28

Southland & Otago
A mix of sun and cloud, chance of a shower later in the day especially about inland areas as cloud thickens. Light winds tend onshore in the afternoon, southwesterlies take over overnight.
Highs: 19-26
