Friday’s national forecast – Heavy rain far north

A front moves onto the upper North Island today bringing some heavy rain in areas exposed to the east, more details in the below forecast. Elsewhere is mainly dry with a northeast airflow but later on or overnight some wet weather starts to spread from the west.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Rain for Northland spreads into Auckland around midday, Waikato during the afternoon then Bay Of Plenty later in the evening. Bay Of Plenty may have the odd light shower before rain moves in later. Rain is heavy for eastern Northland till early afternoon, Coromandel in the evening then Bay Of Plenty overnight. Blustery northeasterlies tend northwest in the north.
Highs: 15 – 17

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Mostly sunny, cloud thickens for Taranaki from afternoon with rain developing in the evening, rain spreads elsewhere later on or overnight. Light easterlies for most, winds becoming fresh for Taranaki.
Highs: 9 – 15

Eastern North Island

Mainly sunny, some cloud at times. Overnight rain spreads from the west. Northeasterly winds.
Highs: 12 – 14

Wellington

Mainly sunny, some cloud later in the day. Light northeasterlies.
High: 13

Marlborough & Nelson

Mainly sunny for Marlborough, cloud increases for Nelson during the day, evening showers for Tasman turn to rain overnight, overnight showers reach into Nelson. Light winds.
Highs: 9 – 13

Canterbury

Mostly sunny after morning fog, some coastal cloud especially later in the day. East to northeasterly winds.
Highs: 5 – 12

West Coast

Partly cloudy, the odd shower later in the evening. East to northeasterly winds.
Highs: 10 – 13

Southland & Otago
Sun and a touch of high cloud, any morning fog clears, light northeasterlies. Coastal Otago may have some mid level cloud, especially later in the day with breezier northeasterlies.
Highs: 4 – 10
