An easterly quarter airflow lies over the country today, tending northeast south of Banks Peninsula and southeasterly further north. The SE airflow over the North Island is quite strong. Expect some heavy rain for the North Island today also.
Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty Rain, heavy falls for Coromandel ease after midday. Northland is dry in the morning then rain pushes in from the south during the afternoon. Strong southeasterlies, coastal gales especially in the east. Later in the evening or overnight rain clears for all.
Highs: 14 – 16
Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Mostly cloudy, chance of a shower, the Central North Island has rain at times pass over from the east with snow to around 800 or possibly 700m. Strong southeasterlies with coastal gales.
Highs: 7 – 14
Eastern North Island
Showers, turning to rain in the morning for Hawkes Bay and Gisborne. Heavy rain north of Mahia Peninsula from afternoon. Snow to 800m for Hawkes Bay, a touch lower for Wairarapa. Southeasterlies strengthen in the morning.
Highs: 10 – 14
Wellington
Cloudy areas with the chance of a shower, more so later in the day. Strong southeasterlies, gales later through Cook Strait.
Highs: 10 – 11
Marlborough & Nelson
A mix of sun and cloud for Nelson, the odd shower for Marlborough. Blustery southeasterlies, gales about Golden Bay and the Sounds.
Highs: 10 – 12
Canterbury
Morning showers south of Banks Peninsula clear then sunny spells break through, winds from the northeast. Further north skies are cloudier with occasional showers and southeasterlies. Snow flurries to 400m.
Highs: 7 – 10
West Coast
Sunny, some high cloud possible especially in the south of the region. Southeasterly winds, breezy at times for North Westland.
Highs: 10 – 13
Southland & Otago
Mostly sunny with some high cloud, morning lower level cloud for Otago clears. Frosty in the morning, heavy frosts overnight especially inland. Northeasterly winds, blustery for coastal Otago.
Highs: 7 – 10
