Friday’s national forecast – Front pushes northwards but weakens

A front pushes northwards over the South Island today bringing showers in the west and about the far south, dry and mostly sunny in the east. The North Island has a westerly airflow.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Partly cloudy with a few showers, drying out in the evening. Southwesterly winds push through to eastern areas (eastern Northland through to BOP) late afternoon or evening.
Highs: 20-23

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Morning cloud and a few showers then sunny spells, west to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 16-19

Eastern North Island

Any morning cloud clears south of Napier then mainly sunny, further north expect a mix of sun and cloud. Northwesterly winds, afternoon easterlies for Hawkes Bay.
Highs: 21-24

Wellington

A mix of sun and cloud with north to northwesterly winds, strong through Cook Strait.
Highs: 18-19

Marlborough & Nelson

Mainly sunny with west to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 20-22

Canterbury

Sunny with northwesterly winds.
Highs: 18-22

West Coast

Occasional showers, especially morning then easing for a time, another burst possible late afternoon / evening as a weakening front moves northwards. Westerlies tend southwest later in the day.
Highs: 13-17

Southland & Otago
Occasional showers with northwesterlies changing gusty westerly around midday (strong about the coast). A fair majority of Otago stays mainly dry with some sun, especially north Otago.
Highs: 13-18
