Friday’s national forecast – Front moves in

A front pushes northwards over the South Island today reaching the lower North Island overnight.

North Island

Mostly sunny weather with some morning cloud in the northeast breaking away (East Cape etc), a few light morning showers about Bay Of Plenty clear. In the afternoon a few isolated showers bubble up about the ranges of Gisborne and East Cape then clear in the evening. Kapiti may see a light shower or two during the day also. Westerlies build across the lower North Island from afternoon becoming a bit gusty, an overnight southerly change moves into Wellington bringing the odd shower.

South Island

Cloudy for the West Coast with rain about Fiordland becoming heavy this morning, a front pushes northwards over the South Island today however it does weaken so a few light showers develop further north along the West Coast around midday, perhaps turning to rain for a time this afternoon then easing again this evening. Rain about Fiordland clears up later this afternoon. High cloud about the far south, a few spits around midday with a westerly change then showers perhaps a little more widespread mid to late afternoon with a southwest change. Sun and developing high cloud in the east, hot temperatures then a southerly change for Canterbury this evening with cloud thickening, a few overnight showers. Sun and some developing high cloud for Nelson and Marlborough, westerly quarter winds becoming gusty this afternoon, strong about the Sounds.
