Friday’s national forecast – Front and rain moves in

A front pushes in to western parts of the North Island today from the Tasman Sea bringing rain, rain eventually moves into the upper South Island also as the front moves southwards.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Showers, chance of an isolated heavy fall especially afternoon as northeasterlies change to the north. Sunny spells break through as winds change.
Highs: 21-22


Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Morning sunny areas possible then showers spread down from the north late morning onwards, showers turning to rain for some, perhaps even a thunderstorm and heavy fall in the afternoon then at night easing. Light winds.
Highs: 19-24


Eastern North Island
Partly cloudy, a dry morning then isolated showers develop in the afternoon especially about the ranges, thunderstorms may develop for Wairarapa. Overnight some rain spreads from the west. Northeasterly winds.
Highs: 21-23


Wellington
A dry morning, sun possible then showers developing in the afternoon before turning to rain. Heavy rain possible in the evening, easing overnight as easterly winds tend to the north.
Highs: 21-25


Marlborough & Nelson
Mostly cloudy, a few showers, more so from late morning. Rain develops late afternoon becoming heavy then easing overnight. Light winds tend southeast from afternoon then northerly overnight.
Highs: 20-21


Canterbury
Mostly cloudy with the odd shower, some morning rain for Banks Peninsula. In the evening widespread rain pushes down from the north. Southerly quarter winds tend to the east later.
Highs: 17-19


West Coast
Mostly cloudy, a few showers. Rain moves in north of Greymouth late afternoon or evening. Light winds.
Highs: 20-23


Southland & Otago
Mostly cloudy with the odd shower, Otago especially near the coast has a higher chance of showers from midday than elsewhere. East to southeasterly winds.
Highs: 16-22
