Friday’s national forecast – Cold front South Island (+8 maps)

A cold front pushes northwards over the South Island today bringing in a cold southwest change, this front moves into the North Island overnight.

A few showers for the western North Island today mainly south of Auckland, picking up overnight. Heavy rain for the West Coast then easing to showers, rain pushes up the east coast also with a southwest change.

Temperatures cooling down in the far south and along the West Coast, warm for the eastern North Island though perhaps getting into the mid twenties.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
A mix of sun and cloud, chance of a shower also mainly south of about Auckland in the west. In the evening showers are more likely in the west including for Northland. West to southwesterly winds.
Highs: 21-23

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Cloudy areas and the odd shower, overnight rain as west to northwest winds change southwest.
Highs: 16-20

Eastern North Island

Sunny with northwesterly winds, overnight southwesterlies move into Wairarapa bringing showers.
Highs: 21-25

Wellington

Partly cloudy, northwesterlies becoming strong in the afternoon nearer Cook Strait. Evening spits possible then rain from midnight with a southerly change.
Highs: 18-20

Marlborough & Nelson

Mostly sunny for Marlborough, some high cloud later in the day. Northwesterlies pick up from afternoon, around midnight expect a southerly change with showers. Nelson is mostly sunny too but expect some rain to spread from the west for a time in the evening then clearing overnight.
Highs: 20-23

Canterbury

Mostly sunny, warm temperatures and there may be some high cloud. Early afternoon a southwest change moves into South Canterbury then reaching North Canterbury late afternoon, this change brings in some rain. Rain will move into the high country during the morning spreading from the west.
Highs: 17-23

West Coast

Showers, rain with heavy falls and possible thunderstorms about South Westland spread into North Westland during the afternoon then easing from the south as northwesterlies change southwest.
Highs: 14-16

Southland & Otago
Rain about Southland moves into Otago during the morning then easing to showers from the south as northwesterlies change southwest, showers clear evening for Southland and overnight about Otago.
Highs: 14-18
