A cold southwesterly airflow lies over the country today, pushing north over the North Island this morning bringing some wet weather. Conversely conditions are starting to clear up for the lower South Island and along the West Coast.
Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Dry first thing then showers move through as southwesterlies strengthen, easing back in the afternoon with sunny spells breaking through. Heavy showers may develop in the evening (mainly south of Northland) as winds tend southerly.
Highs: 18 – 21
Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Rain with southerlies strengthening in the morning, gale force winds about coastal areas. Rain eases in the evening.
Highs: 11 – 17
Eastern North Island
Rain for Wairarapa pushes northwards in the morning with freshening southwesterlies, rain may be heavy late afternoon / evening with a chance of hail.
Highs: 17 – 21
Wellington
Showers, possibly heavy at times with hail. Strong to gale southerly winds.
Highs: 16 – 17
Marlborough & Nelson
Morning rain, possibly heavy with hail then easing to showers perhaps clearing in the afternoon with some sun breaking through. Gusty southerlies, strong to gale about the outer sounds.
High: 17
Canterbury
Showers, heavy at first with hail then easing, clearing in the evening for most but the odd one may hang about north of Christchurch overnight. Snow flurries may reach down to 700m. Gusty south to southwesterly winds, strong about the coast ease later in the day.
High: 14
West Coast
Sunny, morning showers for North Westland clear. Southeasterlies, tending southwest for a time in the afternoon.
Highs: 18 – 19
Southland & Otago
Showers ease then clear around midday, a few snow flurries to 600m. Sunny spells increase from afternoon. Cold overnight especially inland with the chance of a light frost. South to southwesterly winds (fresh for coastal Otago) die out later in the evening.
Highs: 11 – 14
