A cold front pushes northwards over the South Island this morning, reaching the lower North Island this afternoon then the upper North Island overnight. In behind a ridge moves over the South Island bringing clearing skies and a likely frosty dawn on Saturday.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Morning cloud breaks to sunny areas, chance of a shower at times in the west. A higher risk of showers for Waikato and Bay Of Plenty in the evening then Auckland overnight as westerlies change southerly.
Highs: 15-17

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Cloudy with the odd light shower, some afternoon rain then easing by evening and clearing as breezy northwesterlies change southeast.
Highs: 13-16

Eastern North Island

High cloud, a southwest change about Wairarapa in the afternoon brings showers, moving into Hawkes Bay and Gisborne by evening. 
Highs: 17-19

Wellington

A cloudy day, a few showers develop late morning then clear mid to late afternoon. Breezy northwesterlies change southerly around midday.
Highs: 14-15

Marlborough & Nelson

Morning scattered rain for Nelson, a few spots possible for Marlborough then clearing by midday. Northwesterly winds change to the east or southeast in the afternoon bringing lower level cloud and a light shower or two, clearing at night.
Highs: 14-15

Canterbury

South to southwesterly winds freshen early morning bringing mostly cloudy skies, chance of a shower from midday mainly north of Banks Peninsula then clearing at night. Frosty by dawn on Saturday.
Highs: 8-10

West Coast

Morning showers clear then sunny spells increase, southwesterly winds die out at night. Frost by dawn on Saturday inland.
Highs: 11-14

Southland & Otago
A mostly cloudy day for Southland and coastal Otago with a few morning showers, chance of a shower lingering through till evening otherwise mainly dry. Central Otago has morning showers clear then sunny spells increase. Southwesterlies gradually ease, fresh about coastal areas in the morning. Frosts by dawn on Saturday especially inland just away from the coast.
