A front moves off the South Island this morning then slows down sitting west of the North Island, moving over later in the day / overnight. Heavy rain for western parts of the South Island eases this morning, strong northwesterlies anywhere from Canterbury through to Wellington.

Mostly cloudy with northerly winds. The odd shower or spit of rain at times from midday, dry spells too.

Auckland

Mostly cloudy with northerly winds, chance of a spit of rain at times from
midday otherwise mainly dry.
High: 19

Bay Of Plenty

Cloudy with northerly winds, chance of a spit or drizzle patch at times
from midday otherwise mainly dry. A greater chance of drizzle overnight.
High: 18

Waikato & Central North Island

Cloudy with northerly winds, a few drizzle patches or spits of rain
possible from midday, long dry spells too.
Highs: 18-19

Eastern North Island

Sunny areas and thickening high cloud, northwesterly winds gusty at times
about the Wairarapa.
Highs: 22-23

Taranaki

Cloudy with rain developing early in the morning, winds brisk from the
north. Rain eases afternoon then clear by evening, northerlies ease also,
gradually tending northwest.
Highs: 16-17

Western North Island

Mostly cloudy with northwesterly winds, a few patchy showers possible at
times mainly afternoon then clearing in the evening.
High: 20

Wellington

Cloudy with strong north to northwesterly winds, possibly gusting to gale
force at times. Spells of rain develop in the morning then clear by
evening.
High: 16

Nelson

Periods of rain clearing early afternoon, sunny spells then increase.
Breezy northwesterlies ease later in the day.

Marlborough

Some rain then clearing early afternoon, becoming mostly sunny after rain
clears. Winds strong and gusty from the northwest then easing later in the
evening.

Canterbury

Any early high cloud clears to a mostly sunny day, strong northwesterlies
inland spread to the coast by midday. In the evening winds change southerly with
increasing cloud.

West Coast

Heavy rain early in the morning eases as northerly winds change northwest.
Showers from midday then clearing later in the evening.
Highs: 15-16

Coastal Otago

Sunny at first, southerlies freshen late morning with increasing cloud then
rain late afternoon.
High: 19

Central Otago

Rain, mainly in the west eases during the morning then clearing around
midday with a few sunny spells then possible. North to northwesterly winds. Mid
afternoon winds change southerly with showers.
High: 16

Southland

Sunny areas and light northerlies at first, a southerly change mid to late
morning brings showers which clear in the evening.
Highs: 14-15
