A strong northwesterly airflow lies over the country today, wet weather in the west with heavy falls for the West Coast of the South Island. Mainly dry with strong northwesterlies out east, gales for some especially Canterbury, Marlborough, Wellington and the Wairarapa.

Auckland & Northland
Sunny spells and increasing cloud with west to northwest winds freshening. The odd light shower from evening, mainly in the west.
Highs: 17-18

Bay Of Plenty

Sunny spells and increasing cloud, mostly cloudy from afternoon with
westerlies freshening. Odd light shower overnight.
High: 18-19

Waikato & Central North Island

Becoming mostly cloudy in the morning, westerly winds freshen. Patchy
drizzle moving in during the afternoon.
Highs: 14-17

Eastern North Island

Sunny spells and thickening high cloud, northwesterly winds strengthen
rising to gale force at times about the Wairarapa from afternoon then further
north overnight.
Highs: 19-21

Western North Island

Cloudy with brisk northwesterlies becoming strong at times from midday,
patchy drizzle. Rain overnight especially north of Wanganui.
High: 16-17

Wellington

Cloudy with strong northwesterlies, gale force from late morning (risk of
severe gales). The odd patchy light shower from midday then rain at night.
High: 17

Nelson

Fairly cloudy with strong northwesterly winds, the odd brief shower at
times then some overnight rain.
Highs: 17-18

Marlborough
Thick high
cloud with strong northwesterlies, gusting to gale force at times from midday
then easing later in the evening. A few brief spits of rain may spread from the
west in the afternoon.

Highs: 18-20

Canterbury

Strong northwesterly winds gusting to gale force at times then easing
during the afternoon. Thick high cloud with the odd spot of rain possible,
mainly PM.
Highs: 18-20

West Coast

Rain, heavy in the morning south of Hokitika then easing. Rain becoming
heavy further north in the afternoon. Strong northwesterly winds easing about
South Westland in the afternoon. Rain eases in the evening for North
Westland.
High: 15

Coastal Otago

Morning rain mostly clearing although there could be the odd remaining
shower about, light winds.
High: 13

Central Otago

Rain, heavy west of the Southern Lakes area easing to showers in the
afternoon and clearing from most eastern parts of the region. West to northwest
winds.
Highs: 11-12

Southland

Early morning rain eases to showers, brisk westerly winds.
High: 12
