Here’s what is making the weather headlines today….
SUNNY IN THE FAR SOUTH / WEST COAST
An easterly quarter airflow over the South Island means the West Coast comes out mainly sunny today, the far south (i.e. Southland and Central Otago) has mainly sunny weather also. Temperatures are likely to reach into the late teens or early twenties.
Temperatures for the upper North Island are likely to be a bit warmer than the aforementioned areas however there will be more cloud with a few showers.
SOME INSTABILITY IN THE NORTH
There is a touch of instability for Auckland and Northland today, more so this morning then gradually backing off as the afternoon moves along. There is suggestions there could be a few rumbles of thunder but more than likely there may just be a few heavy isolated showers, easing gradually this afternoon.
For more information on thunderstorm potential today see this outlook from Metservice here.
SOUTH ISLAND NICE ON SATURDAY – FRESH WINDS IN THE EAST
A ridge of high pressure brings settled weather to the South Island on Saturday, expect mostly sunny weather however there could be some morning cloud in the east before breaking away in the afternoon. Inland areas may see a mist or fog patch to start the day then clearing. Finally east to northeasterly winds freshen up in the afternoon along the east coast, the Canterbury Plains for example will see winds become a bit gusty perhaps.
Inland, Nelson, along the West Coast and about the far south winds are light.
Conversely looking further north, for the upper North Island easterly winds are fresh to strong.
