Friday’s headlines (x3): Low brings heavy rain, Rain continues on Saturday – North Island, Temperatures

> From the WeatherWatch archives

Here’s what is making the weather headlines today….

LOW STILL SET TO BRING IN HEAVY RAIN

A low moving in from the Tasman Sea brings rain to the upper South Island and much of the North Island pushing in from the west.

There is still the potential for some heavy rain with this system, the West Coast, top of the South Island and lower North Island are still the focus. Timing wise pockets of heavy rain affect the aforementioned areas from this afternoon but it may not be till overnight or towards dawn tomorrow morning that rain really intensifies for a time.

Keep an eye on the watches and warnings coming out from Metservice here.

You can track the rain potential and when it may arrive with our maps here.

RAIN CONTINUES ON SATURDAY IN THE NORTH

The area of low pressure that brings the rain mentioned above slowly moves over the North Island on Saturday, expect more rain with heavy falls in the morning for Taranaki across to Wairarapa, easing from afternoon.

Bay Of Plenty especially in the east may see some heavy rain too. Then there is still the chance of some instability meaning a little thunder perhaps late afternoon or evening for Waikato and Bay Of Plenty. A southerly change pushing into Hawkes Bay late afternoon could trigger thunder for a time also.

Overnight rain clears away but showers still remain for Hawkes Bay, Gisborne, East Cape and eastern Bay Of Plenty.

TEMPERATURES BOUNCE BACK OVER THE WEEKEND – EASTERN SOUTH ISLAND

Saturday afternoon sees increasing sunny spells for the eastern South Island, temperatures will bounce back a little compared to Friday. High’s on Friday will be in the mid teens, Saturday sees temperatures in the mid to late teens.

On Sunday high’s for Canterbury reach into the early twenties, especially inland just away from the coast, nearer the coast could see the influence of a northeast meaning slightly cooler temperatures there.

Temperatures for the North Island are naturally warmer overall, reaching into the early to perhaps mid twenties at times over the next three days.

Hi Aaron, keep an eye on the thunderstorm risk maps here: https://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/maps-radars/lightning/thunderstorm-risk

You can see Saturday has a low-moderate risk – fairly narrow risk area.
