> From the WeatherWatch archives

Here’s what is making the weather headlines today….

HEAVY RAIN IN THE NORTHEAST – NORTH ISLAND

A low will drive some heavy rain into the northeastern corner of the North Island today. East Cape, Gisborne and Hawkes Bay more specifically.

The low also drives in strong southeasterly winds for the northeastern corner, gales are possible for coastal areas.

Metservice has a few warnings out, you can see them here. So far 100 – 140mm of rain is possible for the ranges of Gisborne during this warning period, lesser amounts nearer the coast. The Metservice warning page will be updated today.

RAIN CONTINUES ON SATURDAY, SOUTH ISLAND SETTLED

Rain for the eastern North Island continues to be heavy at times on Saturday right through till about midnight when conditions finally ease. Wairarapa is at this stage likely to see lighter falls, the heavier stuff is for Hawkes Bay and Gisborne. Once again check out the warnings from Metservice here.

Western parts of the North Island have partly cloudy skies, it is mainly dry although there may be a few scattered areas of rain in the morning before clearing. South to southeasterly winds for coastal parts may be strong and gusty in the west and east but easing later in the day.

The South Island’s weather is looking much more settled thanks to a high, there will be some cloud in the east though, perhaps even a morning drizzle patch or two then sunny areas increase from afternoon. The West Coast, Southland and Central Otago should have great weather.

SUNDAY AND MONDAY

Cloud and showers / spits of rain spread southwards down along the east coast of the South Island on Sunday while simultaneously clearing further north, meanwhile a front approaches from the Tasman Sea. It will be a dry morning in the west then late afternoon or evening rain sets in, thunderstorms for the western and upper North Island later in the day look like a distinct possibility.

Monday sees rain or showers for western regions, the odd heavy fall with thunderstorms is possible. Eastern regions could have an early spot of rain then it looks likely coming out mostly sunny and warm with a northerly airflow. Late afternoon or evening some rain spreads into Otago.
