Here’s what is making the weather headlines today….
SETTLED, FRONT FAR SOUTH OVERNIGHT
A high pressure system brings settled weather today, there’s nothing too much to elaborate on when it comes to highs. More or less, enjoy the autumn sunshine.
We do have a front moving on to the far south overnight though, rain will start to build for Fiordland this evening becoming heavy, perhaps some thunder may be heard too. Expect spits of rain for Southland from this evening, a few spits for Otago overnight.
FRONT MOVES NORTHWARDS THIS WEEKEND
Our front mentioned above pushes northwards over the South Island on Saturday then reaches the North Island on Sunday. It will weaken as it moves northwards so the West Coast gets some heavy rain plus a chance of thunderstorms but the western North Island more or less just receives showers, in fact the front runs out of puff on Sunday so Northland and Auckland stay dry.
The eastern South Island sees a few spits of rain with high cloud on Saturday but temperatures should be warm until a southwest change moves through. The eastern North Island is mainly dry on Sunday but Wairarapa may have morning spots of rain then clearing away.
The below precipitation accumulation map through to the 31st March shows most of any rain coming up will be along the West Coast and about the far south. Overnight Monday into Tuesday a low moves in from the Tasman Sea and brings some rain to the North Island, you can see heavy rain just offshore from Bay Of Plenty and about East Cape so the potential for some persistent rain there.
TEMPERATURE DROP TUESDAY NEXT WEEK
Fresh south to southwesterly winds push northwards over the country on Tuesday next week, this brings a drop in temperatures. Rain or showers moves through with the change, more of a focus in the east this time around, western regions get less precipitation.
