Here’s what is making the weather headlines today….
SHOWERY LONG WEEKEND IN THE WEST
The west to southwesterly airflow lying over us today and this weekend means western regions are going to pick up on showers or rain, it will be drier in the east.
On Saturday however there will be longer dry spells for both the West Coast and western North Island, the western North Island on Saturday will likely see longer sunny spells also.
On Sunday there’s some heavy rain for the West Coast in the morning then easing to showers in the afternoon as a front pushes northwards, the western North Island sees increased shower activity also although north of Auckland may be dry in the morning.

SPOTLIGHT ON NAPIER
Many eastern regions are going to have good weather this weekend. Napier will be hard to beat though with high’s in the late teens, gentle westerly quarter winds and mainly sunny skies.
The below graphic is from ruralweather.co.nz, the temperatures are being a touch under cooked by the weather model here, high’s may be more around 18 to 19 degrees.
NEXT HIGH?
Not for a while by the looks of things. We have a westerly quarter airflow over the country at the moment and that looks to persist for a while. About mid next week a decent front launches out of the Tasman Sea and over the country, naturally there will be a temperature drop following this change and likely some snow in the ranges.
After the southwest airflow behind this front eases a ridge of high pressure sneaks in on Friday for a moment, but it doesn’t look to last long as another big front approaches from the Tasman Sea.
