Here’s what is making the weather headlines today….
HEAVY RAIN POTENTIAL IN THE NORTH
A front slowly slips southwards over the upper North Island this morning and afternoon, eastern Northland first thing then north Auckland / Great Barrier Island carries a risk this morning, Coromandel could see heavy rain this afternoon.
For rain watches put out by Metservice, see this page here.
CHANCE OF A THUNDERSTORM – NORTHLAND
There is some unstable air in behind the front mentioned above, Northland has a chance of an isolated thunderstorm this afternoon (more in the northwest).
For more on today’s thunderstorm chances, see Metservice’s thunderstorm outlook here.
MOST UPCOMING RAIN IN THE NORTHEAST
The airflow for today and the next seven days will be coming in from the northeast, so it stands to reason that parts of the country exposed to the northeast will experience the most rain coming up.
Auckland though to East Cape then down along the east coast into Wairarapa. Marlborough for the South Island may see slightly higher than average rainfall for this time of year.
The map below runs from today through to Friday 23rd June. Blue colouring means that part of the country is expecting more rainfall than would normally be expected at this time of year, red means less rainfall is expected and white is an average amount of rainfall. The more intense either red or blue then either scenario is more true.
Interestingly it’s looking quite dry for the West Coast and far south of the South Island, the western North Island too. If you want to know where the better weather is coming up over the next seven days, there’s your answer.
