Here’s what is making the weather headlines today….
DRY TOWARDS THE END OF JULY?
Well, maybe….
Lets take a look at a precipitation accumulation map for Wednesday 5th July through to Thursday 13th July. As you can see many regions are in for some rain but the far south and up the guts of the lower South Island is looking a bit dry.
Note: For a key on the rainfall colours below, see this page here.
Now lets look at a rainfall accumulation map for Thursday 13th July through to Friday 21st July. Some drier weather to be had during this period perhaps although some eastern parts look to see some rain.
In long range modelling out of the USA (GFS) the period below shows mostly westerly quarter airflows moving around high pressure in the north Tasman. Showers or some rain in the west as fronts move through (more so the West Coast, to a lesser extent the western North Island) and drier weather in the east, in fact the GFS models don’t show the rain for eastern regions as can be seen below. Either way perhaps this period will be a bit more settled compared to what we have been dished out recently.
HEAVY RAIN STILL DUE IN THE NORTH
As a front sweeps down over the upper North Island today we can expect rain for some exposed to the east to be heavy. Northland sees this first then easing in the afternoon, Coromandel starts to pick up heavy rain in the evening then Bay Of Plenty and eventually East Cape overnight.
Tasman overnight may see heavy rain also.
Any rain watches or warnings if they are issued by Metservice can be seen here.
FROSTY THIS MORNING
Before some wet weather moves in we still have frosts to contend with this morning and again on Saturday morning for the South Island (especially inland).
This morning the frost risk is greater with a smattering of -4’s perhaps even getting as low as -5 for the Mackenzie Country, coastal areas on the edge have low’s this morning of around 0 to 1 degrees.
As we get to Saturday morning we have more cloud to contend with so lows first thing won’t be as cold as today, but still…. parts of the Mackenzie Country could still get to -2 or -3, Central Otago around 0 to -1.
