Friday Newsfeed: Muggy air about to slowly sliding away ahead of Cold Front + Heavy Rain Red Alert for West Coast

High pressure is slowly sliding off the South Island and other parts of NZ today and this places a northerly quarter flow over many regions with rain becoming very heavy for parts of the West Coast – and a few showers around the North Island.

Winds may be blustery in some exposed areas of both islands with even the potential for more severe weather conditions in the South Island (West Coast rain, blustery winds further inland and to the east).

Some rainfall totals for the West Coast are significant with modelling predicting an incredible 800 to 1000mm+ from this event in the mountains. Please follow MetService Warnings and local authorities – this is likely to cause slips and flooding.

Hottest and driest weather today will be eastern NZ up to about Hawke’s Bay, then it’s eastern areas for the top of the North Island most exposed to a few showers thanks to the north-east airflow.

If you’re camping in a tent or awning then please download our new App so you can see wind gust graphs at your location (FYI: winds of 20km/h+ and gusts 40km/h+ can be frustrating when in a tent or awning. You can even make the most of the 2 month Free Trial for the PRO alerting version (cancel anytime) and play around with creating your own camping alerts this summer. (you set the criteria and over time you can learn to calibrate it/adjust it to suit).

Please Note: Rain Alerts are very much part of our our PRO alerting app – but do read the FAQ in the app’s left hand menu. Despite our rain forecast data being most accurate, the Government allows for significant limitations and restrictions be placed on public rain radar data being used in any real time or future weather forecasts. The FAQ explains strengths and weaknesses in NZ’s current rain forecasting capabilities, regardless of who the forecast provider is. It also explains how your support of the app’s PRO version will help fund WeatherWatch to develop real time rain-radar alerts into NZ, for the first time ever).

Please Note: We have NO weather video today, our next update is this Monday.
