Freezing morning greets big portion of New Zealand

Temperatures have plummeted well below zero overnight as skies cleared and winds died out following the recent polar blast.  

WeatherWatch.co.nz says this morning is the coldest of 2014 so far.

As of 6:45am it was -5 in Queenstown and -4 in Alexandra.

Christchurch had -4 also while Dunedin was on -1 along with Ashburton.

It’s -2 in Nelson and into the North Island at 6:45am it was -1 in Paraparaumu.

Hamilton had -1 and Auckland +2 to +4.

Temperatures through some inland parts of Central Otago were expected to drop below -10 this morning.

The coldest part of the day is shortly before sunrise – meaning some of the above temperatures may drop even further.

With snow melt yesterday then freezing temperatures overnight WeatherWatch.co.nz says there is a high risk of black ice around the South Island and also Central Plateau highways this morning.
