Death toll in Thailand flooding rises to 206

> From the WeatherWatch archives

More than 200 people have died from flooding in Thailand, the government said Saturday, raising an earlier estimate.

Thailand’s Disaster, Prevention and Mitigation Department said the count now stands at 206. The total takes in a period that began October 10.

Nearly 7 million people are affected by the floods in more than 25,000 villages, the government said.

The majority of those killed — 84 — lived in the central region. Sixty people died in the south, the department said.

Residents fled to high ground after heavy rains caused rivers to overflow throughout the country.
